Who we are
Essex Shed Network is a partnership between Maldon and District CVS and CVS Uttlesford. Each partner is governed independently with their own set of charity trustees.
Together the Essex Shed Network partners work to support the development and promotion of Men in Shed projects across the County. We share the Essex Shed Network branding, website and databases to have one point of contact for people interested in Men in Shed projects.
The Essex Shed Network is committed to conducting business in accordance with all applicable Data Protection legislation.

In order to help people who use our services to understand how and why personal data is collected, used and stored we have prepared this Privacy notice. This notice relates in a general way to the security of the Essex Shed Network database and working practices, for more specific information on the Data protection policies of individual partners please contact them directly.

Data we collect
The Essex Shed Network holds information on individuals involved with or interested in Men in Shed projects in Essex. This could include
- Shed leaders, supervisors and volunteers
- Individuals attending Sheds (Shedders)
- Individuals attending Shed related projects (e.g. Shed inside or health groups)
- Individuals interested in receiving updates from the Essex Shed Network.
Shedders, Shed project participants and shed volunteers (inc. supervisors)
Personal data for people involved with Sheds is collected through their participation at a project or event. This may be through an online or paper form, by email, over the phone or face to face to a project worker.
What information will be collected?
This form will request
- Your name
- Your address
- Your email address and phone number
- Your date of birth
- Demographic data including gender, age, ethnicity, employment status, disability status.
Demographic data is classed as “special categories of personal data” and is optional.
Over time we will also collect information from you in relation to the impact of our project such as feelings of wellbeing and reduced isolation.
How will we use your data?
Staying in touch
The information on the database will be used to enable us to stay in touch with you if there is legitimate reason for us to get in touch with you on an individual basis.
However it will not form the basis for a mailing list or any regular mailings, information for mailing lists will be held separately and you will only receive these if you choose to opt in.
Monitoring our service
Special Categories of personal data are collected in order for us to understand the demography of people who are interested in the Essex Shed network. This information as an anonymised report may be shared with our funders and other interested parties.
This data is optional and you can choose not provide this data when registering. If you have provided this information but would like it to be removed, please contact the Essex Shed Network with your full name and date of birth.
We will also record “outcome” data on our databases which will be used to monitor the impact we are having to the lives of people involved with Sheds. This will include reported feelings of decreased isolation and improved wellbeing etc. This information will be linked to your personal record within our database and will be used to populate anonymous reports which will be shared with our funder and other stakeholders.
Contact details of shedders and other interested parties will not be shared with a third party unless explicit consent is received.
Staying in touch
The Essex Shed Network can send you updates from time to time, this could include new opportunities, events and news from Sheds and projects in Essex
To receive this information you must opt into our mailing list. This can be done via our website www.essexshednetwork.co.uk, at an event or by requesting a project worker to add you to the list.
You can opt out of receiving these up dates at anytime by contacting the Essex Shed Network.
The Essex Shed Network utilises Mailchimp to send out electronic mailing lists.
Mailchimp is an online platform that enables organisations to manage mailing lists and send out electronic mail shots. Because Mailchimp is based in the USA it has a Privacy Shield framework which is recognised as providing adequate protection for personal data and complies with the regulations set out in General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

If you don’t wish to receive emails through this route you will be able to opt out at the footer of each email or you can let us know and we can remove your email address on your behalf.
How do we store your data?
Data is stored in our online database. This database is provided by PipeMedia and we have a data processing contract in place with them which ensures that they comply with data protection legislation and has suitable security in place and they understand their responsibilities and liabilities and are committed to their obligations under the current Data Protection Legislation.
How long do we keep data?
We put together reports on our services and customers on an at least annual basis. This information is required by our funders and to help us design services for the future. For this reason data is retained on the Essex Shed Network database.
Data will be retained for the duration of our current funded period running until February 2022.
If you would like to have your data removed from the database prior to this data please get in touch.
Who can access my data?
Essex Shed Network database is password protected and only staff who work for the Network can access the data held within it.
The Essex Shed Network recognises that individuals have rights in relation to the data they hold as defined below:
- You have the right to see the data held about you.
- You have the right to request any inaccurate or incomplete data that is held on you is corrected.
- You have the right to request that data is removed from our databases.
- You have the right to request that no further processing is carried out on your data.
- You have the right to request that The Essex Shed Network transfer your personal data to a different service provider.
- You have the right to object to The Essex Shed Network processing data based on legitimate interest and The Essex Shed Network will put a hold on processing and consider all objections raised before
Your right to complain
If you feel that The Essex Shed Network or one of the are not complying with Data Protection Legislation you have the right to lodge a complaint to the Information Commissioners Office (ICO).
