*In April 2019 the Essex Shed Network needs to report on its third year to its funders. In order to show them how well the Network is doing, we need to collect some information through organised focus groups.
The focus groups will consist of an approximately 1 hour group meeting with 5-6 individual Shedders to ask questions about the friendships/support they have experienced at their Shed.
The meeting will be facilitated by MDCVS Projects Officer & social researcher Catherine Kennelly and Essex Shed Network Communications Coordinator Gary Nicholas.
The meeting’s discussion will be audio-recorded and transcribed for analysis. The taped meeting will only be listened to and transcribed by the Projects Officer. Quotes will be used to highlight the key themes emerging from the discussions but no names will be used to protect the individuals right to anonymity.
You will be asked to sign a written consent form stating that you give permission for your information to be recorded and used in the report. However you can change your mind at any point up to submission of the final report.
All the information collected will be stored in line with current data protection legislation.

The Essex Shed Network are extremely pleased to announce that they have been awarded funding for a further three years from the Reaching Communities England, Big Lottery Fund. This will allow the Essex Shed Network (a partnership of Maldon & District CVS and Uttlesford CVS) to continue to provide Sheds with support and advice as well as facilitating development of new sheds across the county.
Clive Emmett, CEO of Uttlesford CVS welcomed the news “We are delighted and proud that the Essex Shed Network has been recognised by the Big Lottery Fund for its value in reducing loneliness and isolation amongst the vulnerable members of our communities, most notably men. The National Lottery funding gives us another three years to build on our successes so far and, importantly, to help build more Sheds!”
Sarah Troop-Laskar, Director of Maldon CVS agreed “Without a doubt this exciting news means our partnership can now focus on growing the network of Sheds across the county. We are looking to take on more staff, offer more training to Shedders, organise more events to give Sheds a chance to network, share knowledge and skills… just really fulfil the potential that the Essex Shed Network has shown over the last three years”
The Essex Shed Network would like to give a big thank you to Essex Community Foundation whose funding comes to an end March 2019, but without which the Network could not have achieved so much to date, including: 10 Sheds Opened, 9 Sheds in development, 5 Successful Shed Networking events, 20+ Shedders benefiting from training and 50+ Volunteers involved in Shed projects.
Looking ahead to the next three years the Essex Shed Network remains dedicated to helping as many communities as possible to have an accessible Shed; a place where men can talk shoulder to shoulder and know they are not alone in whatever they are going through.
Join us for Christmas Dinner at St Marks College, Audley End, Saffron Walden on the evening of Wednesday 19th December. Shedders, friends of Sheds, benefactors of Sheds and their family and friends are all welcome to join us from 6.15pm for welcome drinks before sitting down for a hearty three course meal followed by a brain teasing quiz.
Come and celebrate in festive fashion another year of growth for Men’s Sheds in the Essex Shed Network!
Tickets are just £10 per person and can be booked by clicking the button below-
We all know the value of Sheds in helping to combat feelings of loneliness and isolation. In recognition of this ESN has been invited to collaborate with Essex County Council on a project with a view to reducng loneliness and isolation across the county.
As part of this we are looking for help from people who would be willing to speak to ECC appointed researchers Britain Thinks:
“We’re looking for people to take part in a research project about loneliness…
Do you sometimes feel lonely? Do you spend more time at home than you would like to? Do you feel you have few close connections with people?
If your answer is yes to any of these questions, we may be interested in speaking to you for some important research commissioned by Essex County Council. Working with research agency, BritainThinks, Essex County Council is looking to speak to a limited number of people living in Essex who feel poorly connected with their community and/or family or friends to take part in a face-to-face interview.
The interview would last around 1.5 – 2 hours and take place either in your home or somewhere else you’d feel comfortable talking e.g. a nearby cafe. An experienced and friendly BritainThinks moderator would have an informal discussion with you about your life and experiences of living in Essex and you would receive £50 in cash as a thank you for your time.
Interviews are taking place in the week commencing 26th November and the week commencing 3rd December. Your participation would be entirely confidential and anonymous – so Essex County Council will not know you have taken part in the research.
If you would be interested in taking part, please get in touch with Katy at BritainThinks (email@example.com) for more information about the research.”
We are pleased to announce that the old cricket pavilion at the Radwinter recreation ground has been made available to the Essex Shed Network, in order to establish a Men’s Shed in the area of Uttlesford.
An open event will be held on Saturday the 17th of November 2018 between 10am to 12pm for any men who would be interested in becoming members of this new Shed.
Member of the ESN team will be available to talk with you about the Shed and how you can get involved, plus there will be tea, coffee and cake available.
Do you find unused tools cluttering your Shed? Not sure what to do with them? It would be worth contacting TWAM – Tools With A Mission – a Christian charity that collects unwanted tools, refurbishes them and then packs them into trade kits before sending them across the world. This enables local people to be trained and provide support to their communities through livelihood creation.
All tools are collected by volunteers and to find your nearest collection agent you can visit their website here – https://www.twam.uk/donatetools
Alternatively you can contact TWAM on 01473 210220 or email firstname.lastname@example.org
